Plan International: Awareness Campaigns Supporting Women, Girls & the Environment

Animus Agency contributed to multiple awareness campaigns for Plan International, supporting communication around female genital mutilation (FGM), women’s participation in the workforce, environmental protection, and other social issues. Across these projects, the creative challenge was to make important topics clear, approachable, and relevant to everyday life. Each subject required its own tone, while sharing a common purpose: helping people understand an issue and recognize their role in positive change.
Communication with a Social Purpose
Awareness campaigns need to connect an issue with the people they hope to reach.
Sensitive subjects demand care in both language and presentation. Practical topics need a clear connection to everyday choices. Across both, creative communication must make the message accessible without losing its meaning.
Our work with Plan International spanned several campaigns, giving us the opportunity to contribute to different conversations around women, girls, communities, and the environment.
The breadth of the collaboration required flexibility: a message about protecting girls calls for a different approach from a campaign about women’s employment or environmental responsibility.
WHEN SILENCE HAS A STORY
An awareness film for Plan International turning a difficult conversation into a human story.
Some stories are difficult to tell. Especially when they involve childhood, family, tradition, and decisions that can shape a girl’s entire future. For Plan International, we created an animated awareness film centered around one simple idea: Every girl deserves the right to grow up safe, heard, and free to shape her own future. Through the story of Sara, the film explores the realities surrounding harmful practices such as female genital mutilation and child marriage, while bringing the conversation closer to the people at its center girls, mothers, families, and communities. Rather than treating the subject as an informational message, we approached it as a human story.
A STORY BUILT AROUND EMOTION
The film opens with Sara alone, surrounded by darkness. She is scared. She is vulnerable. And she is silent. From there, the story gradually opens up to reveal the world around her the community, the girls growing up within it, the families making difficult decisions, and the realities that can take away a child's innocence and future. This contrast became an important part of the storytelling: darkness and light, isolation and community, fear and hope. The visual journey follows Sara from a place of vulnerability toward a world where awareness and protection can create a different path.

Raising Awareness About Female Genital Mutilation
One of the subjects covered in our collaboration was female genital mutilation, also known as FGM.
Communication around this issue requires sensitivity, dignity, and clarity. The subject involves deeply personal experiences and established social beliefs, making the way a message is expressed especially important.
Our contribution supported awareness efforts around ending FGM, with a creative approach intended to make a difficult subject understandable and open space for discussion.
For this kind of campaign, the responsibility extends beyond attracting attention. It means treating the people represented with respect and keeping the purpose of the communication clear.
Supporting Women’s Participation in the Workforce
Our collaboration also included awareness campaigns around women’s work and participation in economic life.
This subject connects to everyday conversations about opportunity, family expectations, independence, and the roles women hold within their communities.
The communication challenge is to bring those ideas into a form audiences can recognize and relate to. Creative work can help make the conversation more accessible by connecting a broad social issue with familiar experiences.
Our contribution supported campaign communication around women’s participation in the workforce, adding to the wider awareness effort.
MEET SARA
At the heart of the film is Sara, our main character and the emotional anchor of the story. Her journey is communicated not only through dialogue, but through her expressions, gestures, body language, and the way she interacts with the world around her. We developed Sara with a broad emotional range from fear and sadness to curiosity, connection, and hope allowing the audience to experience the story through her perspective. Alongside her, we developed the characters that shape her world: Sara's Mother representing care, family, and the possibility of awareness. The Girls representing childhood, community, and the futures that are worth protecting. The Child Protection Facilitator representing education, empowerment, and the people working to create safer environments for children. Every character was created to have a purpose within the story.

CHARACTERS WITH A PURPOSE
Every character was designed to carry a part of the story. From Sara’s vulnerability to her mother’s quiet concern, the girls’ shared sense of childhood, and the facilitator’s reassuring presence, each character brings a different emotional layer to the film. Their expressions, silhouettes, gestures, and body language were carefully developed to make every emotion readable, authentic, and deeply connected to the world around them.

BUILDING A WORLD PEOPLE CAN RECOGNIZE
The story moves through different environments from intimate family spaces and dark interiors to classrooms, streets, homes, and wider community scenes. We wanted the world to feel familiar and human, rather than like a generic animated setting. Warm Egyptian inspired architecture, local streets, palm-lined neighborhoods, classrooms, family homes, and institutional spaces helped ground the story in a recognizable cultural context. At the same time, cinematic lighting and carefully controlled color transitions allowed the environment to evolve with the narrative. The darker moments feel confined and isolated. As awareness enters the story, the world gradually becomes warmer, brighter, and more open.

FROM AWARENESS TO ACTION
As Sara's story develops, the film moves beyond the problem itself. We introduce the importance of education, protection, and speaking up, showing how awareness can create a different future for girls and their communities. The story eventually reaches the legal and support systems surrounding child protection, including the message that female genital mutilation is punishable under Egyptian law. And then comes one of the film's most important messages: You don't have to face it alone. The film closes by directing children and families toward the Child Helpline 16000 transforming awareness into a clear path toward support.
For Animus, the challenge was not simply to animate the message. It was to make the audience feel it first. We developed the project as a complete visual storytelling experience combining character design, visual development, art direction, animation, cinematic composition, lighting, camera movement, and motion design into one coherent language. Every expression had a purpose. Every environment supported the narrative. Every transition was designed to move the audience emotionally from one moment to the next. The result is a film where the visual craft works quietly in service of the message allowing the story, rather than the technique, to remain at the center.
WHEN THE STORY CAME TO LIFE
This is where every part of the visual development came together. Characters moved beyond static designs, environments became living spaces, and storyboard frames evolved into fully animated scenes. Through character acting, expressive movement, cinematic camera work, lighting, pacing, and carefully crafted transitions, each scene was built to carry the emotion of Sara’s journey forward. Every gesture, pause, look, and camera movement was intentionally shaped around the story, transforming a collection of illustrated moments into one continuous emotional experience. This was the defining stage of the film the moment the characters began to breathe, the world began to move, and Sara’s story truly came to life.
Encouraging Environmental Responsibility
Environmental protection formed another part of the collaboration.
For environmental awareness to feel relevant, audiences need to see how the topic connects with the spaces they live in and the decisions they make.
Campaign communication can help establish that connection, making a broad issue more immediate and understandable.
Our work contributed to awareness efforts around caring for the environment, extending the collaboration into a subject with a different audience mindset and communication need.

A MESSAGE WORTH MOVING
This project was created around a sensitive subject. So the goal was never to make something loud for the sake of being memorable. It was to create something human, accessible, and emotionally honest. A story that starts with silence. Moves through fear. Finds awareness. And ends with hope.
Multiple Topics, a Consistent Creative Responsibility
Working across several awareness campaigns requires more than applying one creative approach to different messages.
Each topic brings its own sensitivities, context, and intended response. The language, tone, and visual presentation need to suit the subject while supporting the campaign’s wider purpose.
Across our contributions to Plan International, the work centered on three communication priorities:
Clarity: Making the central message easy to understand.
Relevance: Connecting the issue with recognizable experiences.
Respect: Presenting people and sensitive subjects with care.
These priorities provided a consistent foundation across a varied body of work.
