Anti-FGM Awareness Campaign
A creative team developed character designs and a campaign video to support an awareness initiative against female genital mutilation (FGM) affecting young girls. The visual approach was designed to simplify the message, emotionally engage audiences, and strengthen public understanding of the risks and consequences of the practice through storytelling and character-driven animation.

WHEN SILENCE HAS A STORY
An awareness film for Plan International turning a difficult conversation into a human story.
Some stories are difficult to tell. Especially when they involve childhood, family, tradition, and decisions that can shape a girl’s entire future. For Plan International, we created an animated awareness film centered around one simple idea: Every girl deserves the right to grow up safe, heard, and free to shape her own future. Through the story of Sara, the film explores the realities surrounding harmful practices such as female genital mutilation and child marriage, while bringing the conversation closer to the people at its center girls, mothers, families, and communities. Rather than treating the subject as an informational message, we approached it as a human story.
A STORY BUILT AROUND EMOTION
The film opens with Sara alone, surrounded by darkness. She is scared. She is vulnerable. And she is silent. From there, the story gradually opens up to reveal the world around her the community, the girls growing up within it, the families making difficult decisions, and the realities that can take away a child's innocence and future. This contrast became an important part of the storytelling: darkness and light, isolation and community, fear and hope. The visual journey follows Sara from a place of vulnerability toward a world where awareness and protection can create a different path.

MEET SARA
At the heart of the film is Sara, our main character and the emotional anchor of the story. Her journey is communicated not only through dialogue, but through her expressions, gestures, body language, and the way she interacts with the world around her. We developed Sara with a broad emotional range from fear and sadness to curiosity, connection, and hope allowing the audience to experience the story through her perspective. Alongside her, we developed the characters that shape her world: Sara's Mother representing care, family, and the possibility of awareness. The Girls representing childhood, community, and the futures that are worth protecting. The Child Protection Facilitator representing education, empowerment, and the people working to create safer environments for children. Every character was created to have a purpose within the story.

CHARACTERS WITH A PURPOSE
Every character was designed to carry a part of the story. From Sara’s vulnerability to her mother’s quiet concern, the girls’ shared sense of childhood, and the facilitator’s reassuring presence, each character brings a different emotional layer to the film. Their expressions, silhouettes, gestures, and body language were carefully developed to make every emotion readable, authentic, and deeply connected to the world around them.

BUILDING A WORLD PEOPLE CAN RECOGNIZE
The story moves through different environments from intimate family spaces and dark interiors to classrooms, streets, homes, and wider community scenes. We wanted the world to feel familiar and human, rather than like a generic animated setting. Warm Egyptian inspired architecture, local streets, palm-lined neighborhoods, classrooms, family homes, and institutional spaces helped ground the story in a recognizable cultural context. At the same time, cinematic lighting and carefully controlled color transitions allowed the environment to evolve with the narrative. The darker moments feel confined and isolated. As awareness enters the story, the world gradually becomes warmer, brighter, and more open.
FROM AWARENESS TO ACTION
As Sara's story develops, the film moves beyond the problem itself. We introduce the importance of education, protection, and speaking up, showing how awareness can create a different future for girls and their communities. The story eventually reaches the legal and support systems surrounding child protection, including the message that female genital mutilation is punishable under Egyptian law. And then comes one of the film's most important messages: You don't have to face it alone. The film closes by directing children and families toward the Child Helpline 16000 transforming awareness into a clear path toward support.
For Animus, the challenge was not simply to animate the message. It was to make the audience feel it first. We developed the project as a complete visual storytelling experience combining character design, visual development, art direction, animation, cinematic composition, lighting, camera movement, and motion design into one coherent language. Every expression had a purpose. Every environment supported the narrative. Every transition was designed to move the audience emotionally from one moment to the next. The result is a film where the visual craft works quietly in service of the message allowing the story, rather than the technique, to remain at the center.
WHEN THE STORY CAME TO LIFE
This is where every part of the visual development came together. Characters moved beyond static designs, environments became living spaces, and storyboard frames evolved into fully animated scenes. Through character acting, expressive movement, cinematic camera work, lighting, pacing, and carefully crafted transitions, each scene was built to carry the emotion of Sara’s journey forward. Every gesture, pause, look, and camera movement was intentionally shaped around the story, transforming a collection of illustrated moments into one continuous emotional experience. This was the defining stage of the film the moment the characters began to breathe, the world began to move, and Sara’s story truly came to life.
Snaps From the Project

We Didn’t Want to Just Explain the Issue. We wanted people to feel it. For a campaign this sensitive, the challenge was finding the balance between awareness and emotion. We built a character-driven world where Sara's story could carry the message naturally through her expressions, her relationships, her surroundings, and the moments that shape her journey. From character development and visual direction to animation and final motion, every detail was created with one purpose: Turn a difficult conversation into a story people could connect with. That’s what made this project meaningful to us not simply creating an animated film, but using animation as a tool for awareness, empathy, and change.
